Bridging the Gap for Offline Access

We partnered with Tech Matters' Terraso initiative, as part of our Green Grants program, to help bring their Land Potential Knowledge System (LandPKS) app offline.

Farmers in rural and developing regions face a critical technology gap: while agricultural tools like Terraso's can provide vital soil data and sustainable land management guidance, many farmers operate in areas with limited or no internet connectivity.

This prevents them from accessing the same technological playing field enjoyed by farmers in well-connected areas—which is increasingly vital as they face changing environmental conditions.

Engineering an Offline-First Solution

Terraso’s app now empowers farmers and conservationists worldwide to make informed decisions about sustainable land management.

With our tech advisory support, their internal team was able to address their off-grid connectivity challenge, drawing upon years of experience and specialist knowledge in React Native and IoT.

Our collaboration focused on four key areas:

  1. Architecture Design: We defined the architecture for offline data collection and cloud synchronization.
  2. Data Management: We designed the approach for managing data across mobile devices.
  3. Technical Review: We reviewed initial code and documentation to provide implementation recommendations.
  4. Design Approach: We advised on building offline capabilities as core functionality rather than an add-on feature.

Enabling ‎offline functionality in LandPKS is crucial for our farmers in remote areas, but navigating the technical challenges was daunting. Whitespectre’s expertise in offline-first architecture and React Native gave us critical insights and provided a clear path forward. They supported us throughout our implementation, resulting in more maintainable code delivered faster. The result: an impactful open source tool for sustainable land management."

Empowering Farmers with Reliable Land Data

Our guidance helped Terraso build their offline-first solution faster, enabling reliable soil data collection for farmers in areas without internet access.

We've been proud to support Terraso’s mission of empowering landscape leaders and conservationists worldwide, helping farmers and conservationists bridge the digital divide, making sustainable land management tools accessible regardless of internet connectivity.

This collaboration demonstrates how targeted technical expertise can help mission-driven organizations overcome specific challenges and extend their reach.
