Users first experience the product's value when creating their first virtual fence. While SpotOn's walked boundary system, which users loved for its unmatched precision, was a flagship feature at launch, it delayed this key experience.



We dramatically accelerated time-to-value by implementing a map-based drawing feature that reduced fence creation from hours to minutes. Our React Native solution maintained performance even for large properties while preserving the original walking option.



This core enhancement catalyzed additional innovations, such as fence editing tools, keep-out zones for exclusion areas, and a Home Zone feature that solved GPS interference challenges indoors - enabling seamless dog movement between indoor and outdoor spaces without triggering false alerts.

Maximizing Battery Life

Working directly with SpotOn's firmware team, we optimized data transmission across GPS, cellular, and Bluetooth channels to extend battery life by 54% while maintaining reliable fence detection. Key optimizations included:



  • Adaptive transmission rates based on activity and location
  • Optimized data payloads and cellular connectivity processes to reduce cellular costs in weak-signal areas
  • An Extended Battery Mode for additional operation time

Our backend processes millions of data points monthly, powering essential tools from support dashboards to breach risk visualizations. This data infrastructure also enabled an activity dashboard, providing owners with real-time pet activity insights.
